Our university reasserted its commitment to sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda from the United Nations, after the results obtained in the 2026 THE Sustainability Impact Ratings international ranking, one of the main global measurements that evaluates the contribution of higher education institutions to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This version included the participation of 1.646 universities from 116 countries and territories, making this ranking one of the main international leaders in measuring social, environmental and sustainable impact, generated by higher education institutions.
The PUCV placed within the 601-800 section at the global level. One of the more significant milestones for the university was to achieve evaluation and report in all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, incorporating SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) this year. This progress is a reflection of the institutional ability to show in tangible ways its contribution to sustainable development from different areas of the work of the university.
According to the Vicerector of Administration and Finance, Alex Paz, “this achievement is the direct result of strategic planning that places sustainability at the center of our institutional work. The Vicerectory has firmly pushed for the progressive transformation of our campuses and schools through energetic efficiency projects, responsible residue management and the optimization of water use, which is the foundation of our progress in SDG 13 (Climate Action)”.
“The investment in infrastructure we have adopted seeks not only to strengthen academic excellence, but also to reassert our commitment to environmental responsibility and move forward towards our carbon neutrality goal”, he added.
Leadership and institutional strengths
The results obtained showed areas in which the PUCV presents an especially outstanding performance, both at the national and international levels. In SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, the University placed second at the national level and in the 201-300 section at the global level, becoming one of the Chilean institutions with greater impact on topics related to innovation, technological development, infrastructure and creation of applied knowledge.
In addition, the performance on SDG 13: Climate Action, has been outstanding. The PUCV placed in the 301-400 section at the global level, sharing this performance level only with one other national institution evaluated in this category.
Likewise, the university achieved relevant results in SDG 14: Life Below Water, also placed in the 301-400 section. This result has special relevance when considering the historical contribution of the PUCV in marine research, ecosystem protection and sustainability related to coastal environments.
Strategic Commitment to the 2030 Agenda
Another relevant aspect of this edition was the incorporation of the PUCV to the international THE Sustainability Impact Network, a decision that is part of an institutional strategy oriented towards strengthening its commitment to sustainable development and global cooperation.
Participation in this network is a tangible demonstration of the work that the university is doing in order to include sustainability principles in fundamental areas such as teaching, research, community engagement and institutional management.
The results obtained at the 2026 THE Sustainability Impact Ratings reflect the progress of the PUCV in social and environmental impact matters, consolidating a trajectory oriented towards responding to global challenges and reasserting its role as an institution that is committed to the construction of a more sustainable development for the nation and the region, as expressed in its 2023-2029 Institutional Strategic Development Plan (PDEI, for its name in Spanish).
