With the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Supercomputing Chilean Corporation for Applied Artificial Intelligence (SCIAA for its name in spanish) – presided by the Tecnoera company, together with the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) and the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María – and the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) company, the technological decentralization process continues as well as the positioning of the Valparaíso Region in this matter.
This is an agreement within the context of the “Development and Management of a National Supercomputing Infrastructure Specialized in Artificial Intelligence” National Contest, launched by the Production Promotion Corporation (CORFO for its name in Spanish), that strengthens the strategic role of our university within the national supercomputing ecosystem.
The Supercomputing Center and Applied AI project, aligned with the National AI Policy, will allow for the analysis of great volumes of data and the creation of solutions for strategic productive sectors such as mining and energy, therefore contributing to sustainable productive development, applied research and the technological decentralization of the country.
Regarding the signing of the memorandum of understanding with the company, the Vicerector of Research, Creation and Innovation, Luis Mercado, highlighted that AMD is one of the most influential technology companies in the world in the development of high-performance processors, with a broad experience in supercomputing, applied AI and critical infrastructures for science and industry.
“In the future, we will not only have commercial ties to this company, but also a training relationship, because we need to train a great number of professionals for the correct use of the equipment and take advantage of the potential of all the technological tools we will develop in our corporation”, he explained.
He also noted that this project includes a millionaire investment on the Government’s part through CORFO, “that will allow us to lead the necessary technologies for the development of supercomputing and Artificial Intelligence at the national level. These technologies today include all the activities that take place in a society. It is a contribution not only to research but to the education of undergraduate and especially graduate students.”
Keith Strier, global vice-president of Artificial Intelligence at AMD commented: “we are proud to participate in different aspects of the AI ecosystem in Chile and it is fundamental that the University, students, faculty and education are at the basis of all of this. We are making our technology and skills available to help you achieve your mission, both in the educational area and the integration of infrastructure and AI skills to the country’s economy, contributing to its future. We hope to continue to collaborate with the university for many years”.
With the signing of this memorandum of understanding between participating universities in the Supercomputing Center project and the AMD company, our university reasserts its commitment to technological decentralization and the development of our region and country.
